I just picked a wedding gift for a good friend and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. The wedding took place over six months ago and I was really starting to sweat it. The registry was picked over and I was stumped. A light bulb went off a few weeks ago when I was driving through Darien, CT, running errands. I remembered a local craftsman that a colleague had mentioned the year before. I found his website, shot him an email…and voila. I am now the proud giver of the perfect gift. A million times better than being the receiver in my opinion.
This gem is Soundview Millworks, and the craftsman is Grant Tankoos. Grant creates custom cleat boards, carving boards, serving boards, cutting boards and wooden accessories using wood from local mill shops and lumberyards. The company adheres to Forestry Stewardship Council Standards (FSC) in order to promote responsible management of the world's forests. This is truly a “look good/feel good” gift.
I chose a double nautical cleat board (pictured above) with a multi-stripe pattern. Personalization including location (WHB for West Hampton Beach) and waypoint (latitude and longitude) of the church were engraved on the board. Grant is patient, friendly and polite. I arrived early and was able to watch him screw in the cleats and heat press the logo on the back. Spending a little time watching him in action was a treat.
I’m pretty sure Soundview Millworks is going to start popping up in stores across the country and demand will pick up (in the meantime, you can shop here). Orders with personalization typically take two weeks. On site pick-ups may or may not include one-on-one time with Lilly, the Soundview Millworks Black Labrador.
